Of Gloucester City Irvin G. “Brownie” Brown Jr., a retired E.I. DuPont employee and a retired longtime volunteer firefighter, died Tuesday of COPD, chronic lung disease (Sept 13). He was 75 and was a lifelong resident of Gloucester City, NJ. Brownie was a 1960 graduate of Gloucester City High School where he played end on the football team and also was on the track team. He worked at E.I. DuPont’s Deepwater, NJ facility for 35 years as a pipefitter, retiring in 1998. He also served as a volunteer firefighter in Gloucester City with the Highland Park Volunteer Fire Company #3 and the Ambulance Squad for 35 years. For many of those years, he served as the engine company’s chief. “Irv Brown, a man of many names: ‘Irv,’ ‘Irvin,’ ‘Brownie,’ ‘Brown,’ and one of my favorites, ‘Swerving Irvin,’” said lifelong friend Gary Marcucci, “I am proud to be one of those Irv used to include in what he called ‘ The Castle Crowd’ and I hope we will all have an opportunity to visit there one day. We have many mementos that sprung from his talent with stained glass. It will help to always keep him in our thoughts. Oh, one more name for Irv Brown - friend!” Marcucci’s wife Phyllis said, “I didn't meet Irv until after he and Charlotte were married and they invited Gary and I to dinner at their house. I remember being so nervous at the beginning of the evening and so comfortable and made welcome at the end of it. That's how Irv always made me feel; welcome and comfortable in his company.” Bill Tourtual, who graduated with Brown recalled, “Irv, was the type of person who was always there to help you no matter what you asked, and that's what I will miss. I lost another great friend and a very generous man.” "Fifty three years ago we had to choose a Best Man for our wedding. We would guess this could become a difficult choice for some. Lucky for us we had a dear friend, a beloved cousin and the best person that we knew for this responsibility." said Bob Straub. His wife Lillian added, “Irv will always be our ‘Best Man.’" Brownie was a man who thoroughly enjoyed his retirement, according to family members. He loved traveling with “the love of his life,” attending family events, spending time with his grandchildren, watching sporting events, and spending time with all his friends and family at Shellbay Campground. Eileen B. Underwood Vitola
Age 63

Of Sewell Formerly of Gloucester City On April 29, 2016, Eileen passed away in the forever loving and devoted care of her husband of 41years, Carl, and their son Mario. She is the daughter of Madeline Agnew and the late Joseph P. Underwood. Beloved sister of Faith, Joe and the late Dan Underwood. She is survived by many loving and caring family and friends. Carl and Mario are deeply appreciative of those who would visit and spend happy times with Eileen in conversation, watching movies, and comforting her. Eileen was so loved by many. She touched everyone in her life. She was such a wonderful individual whose departure has left a void in the hearts of many. Eileen was so beautiful inside and out. She was a saint in the eyes of everyone. During her battle with ALS, she was a realist, facing her battle with dignity and grace, never feeling sorry for herself and thankful that It was she with this disease and not her family. Eileen devoted her life to her husband and son. It is with great sadness she is no longer here; the only compensation is that she is no longer suffering. Eileen used facial recognition software to communicate when ALS took her ability to use her hands. Here is a quote she posted on Twitter: "ALS cannot rob my capacity to love and appreciate, nor can it take my spirit that believes life is beautiful. Everyday on earth is a gift". We will always have you in our hearts. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend her viewing on Friday, May 6 from 9:30 AM to 12 Noon at Saint Mary’s R.C. Church: 426 Monmouth Street, Gloucester City. Mass of Christian Burial 12:30 pm in the Church. (PARKING FOR VIEWING AND MASS WILL BE AT GLOUCESTER CITY MUNICIPAL BUILDING LOT . Edward J.J. Dennery
Age 91

Of Mantua Lt. Commander Edward John Joseph Dennery of Mantua, formerly of Gloucester City, died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on April 6, 2016. He was 91, a member of the Greatest Generation. A pilot in the U.S. Navy, he was a veteran of WWII and retired from the Naval Reserves. Born December 15, 1924 at home on Market Street in Gloucester City. Mr. Dennery graduated with a perfect attendance record from St. Mary’s Grammar School and from Gloucester Catholic High School, Class of 1942. He then attended Rutgers University for 1 semester, where he was a member of the football team. On his 18th birthday, he enlisted in the US Navy as an Aviation Cadet - he had already learned to fly at an airstrip in Vineland. He was told to finish out the semester and then await orders. He was assigned to the V-12 U.S. Navy College Training Program, a venture inaugurated to provide undergraduate education for selected applicants and commissioned officers for duty in WWII. He graduated as an Ensign in 1944. Following his war service, he returned to Rutgers University under the GI bill and graduated with a BS in Animal Studies as a member of the Class of 1950. During high school and throughout college, Mr. Dennery worked part-time for his family’s business, Dennery’s Dairies in Gloucester City, taking on full-time responsibilities after graduating. When the business was sold in the late 1950’s, he and one of his aunts partnered to form DECCO Quick Clean, a chain of coin-operated laundromats, which he owned, operated and maintained until his retirement in the early 1990’s. Edward was inducted in the Gloucester City Lions Club in 1953 and was the oldest and longest serving member. He served as President from 1974-1975 and was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Award. He was also instrumental in the creation and building of the Gloucester City Swim Club. Predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Joanne Milner Dennery, his parents, Helen C. of Gloucester City and Edward J. Dennery, of California, and his sister Alice Mitchel, of California. Survived by his children Eileen Mannion, (Ed) of West Deptford; John (Dawn) of Gloucester City; Patrick (Patti) of Pennsville; grandchildren Jason, Helen Marzin (Matt), Michael, Cassandra and Allison. He was a spiritual man, a man who believed in service to others, and a loving husband and father, son and brother, grandfather and uncle. He loved to fly his single-engine plane, travel with his wife, Joanne, and tinker with things to find out how they worked. But most of all he loved a good joke. Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation on Tuesday morning from 9:30 to 11 AM at St. Mary’s R.C. Church: 426 Monmouth St., Gloucester City. Mass of Christian Burial 11 AM in the church.
