October Month of the Holy Rosary
The month of October is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary, and it is good to recall how it came to be so, especially in these times when extreme factions of Islam seek to overtake and convert the world to an Islamic Shariah state.
By 1571, the Ottoman Turks, followers of Mohammed, had been successful in campaigns to conquer parts of Europe, and had their sights set on Italy and Rome. A victory at Lepanto would have led to a conquering of central Europe by the Ottoman Empire. Pope Pius V was able to bring together a Holy League coalition of states. These Catholic states were not altogether friendly with one another, but the pope was able to coordinate their efforts to thwart the attack of the Mohammedans. A copy of the miraculous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was given to one of the fleet's leaders, Mass was celebrated on the ships and the pope ordered the Holy Rosary to be prayed by the religious and lay people as well as by the fleet sailors. Pope Pius V is said to have been given miraculous knowledge of the victory as it occurred, when it took two weeks for the news to reach him by messenger. The victory had by the Holy League at the Battle of Lepanto was attributed to the intercession of Our Blessed Mother and the date of that victory, October 7, became the Feast of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary.
We live in an era when adherents to Islam are intent upon conquering and converting the world. They threaten the West in general and Christians in particular. We have the most important and effective weapon there is: the holy rosary. Our Lady has promised that in the end her Immaculate Heart will triumph. We, her army, must pick up our weapons and pray the most holy rosary. It is the single greatest thing we can all do to fight the terrors that surround us.
