The Precious Blood of Christ
About 96 A.D., Pope Clement wrote: "Let us fix our gaze on the Blood of Christ and realize how truly precious It is, seeing that It was poured out for our salvation and brought the grace of conversion to the whole world." The Church's devotional life is rich and vast. Do you know that each month is dedicated to a specific devotion? The month of July focuses upon the Precious Blood of Our Lord, shed on Calvary for love of each one of us. The first Sunday of July was traditionally the Feast of the Precious Blood. By His Blood we are saved. Through His Blood, the sacraments of our holy Church were born. Jesus' Blood washes every soul devoted to Him.
During the Consecration, when the priest places a particle of the Host into the chalice, he says secretly, "May the commingling of the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ bring eternal life to us who receive it." Then, as he purifies the paten into the chalice prior to consuming the Precious Blood he quotes from Psalm 115, "What return can I make to the Lord for all he has given to me? I will take the chalice of salvation and call on the name of the Lord." A popular devotion to be encouraged is for one to silently pray "Remember O Lord, Thy servant Thou hast redeemed by Thy Most Precious Blood," at the elevation of the chalice, following consecration.
St. Gertrude prayer for souls in Purgatory: "Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen." Attached to this prayer is a promise that one thousand souls will be released from Purgatory when said devoutly.
